Healthy Cognitive Aging & Cognitive Compensatory Training
The California Club, in partnership with UCI Health, hosted a health seminar focusing on healthy cognitive aging on Thursday, October 9, 2025. Based on the importance of the subject matter, the Club arranged for a taping of the seminar to air on Village TV every Friday in November at 11:30 am.
The objectives of the discussion included assisting participants in distinguishing between normal aging of the brain, mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia. The speakers discussed the principles of what a healthy aging brain looks like.
An added objective included an introduction to cognitive compensatory training to improve memory. CCT uses internal, external and environmental strategies to work around cognitive deficits like memory loss, rather than directly restoring impaired brain circuits. Techniques include using calendars for prospective memory, mnemonic devices like rhymes, and learning strategies like chunking information into smaller pieces to improve memory and overall functioning for individuals with mild cognitive impairment.
Speakers for the event were Hayley B. Kristinsson, PsyD and Michael Lopez, PhD. Both physicians are Assistant Clinical Professors in the Department of Neurology at UCI.
